Chapter 15
The major excitement was over for now. The whole case was heading down that slow slope to justice. Nate was a little disappointed. It had been a break from the routine of DUIs, shoplifting and domestic disturbances. Now he was back on the beat. Tuesday's note still scrambled his thoughts. His gut ached every time he remembered the words. Like a good cop, he'd turned it in to his superiors. Normally, he would run to the union rep, but there was a good chance it was connected to the Price case. Someone had to know. If it hadn't been wrapped up with everything else, Nate wasn't sure what he would have done. The case made the decision easy. It didn't make the hurt, fear and betrayal go away.
As he drove through the twisted streets of Highland Park, the call came across about a fight. Every sense revved. Calls did that to officers. Who knew what Nate would find when he got there. It could just be an argument that got too loud for the neighbors to stand. Or it could be an all out gang jump in.
He was amped and ready when he screeched to a halt at the address.
Stress was an inherent part of his job. They called it hypervigilance. Sort of a low level state of readiness pervaded every waking moment. Even when he wasn't on duty it didn't turn off. Patrolling, monitoring calls and constantly scanning people and cars for potential trouble left him brain dead by the end of most shifts. Then, all the way home Nate would be waiting for a call while he scrutinized every car he passed.

Two young women, one bouncing a baby on her hip, were in the yard. Both wore tank tops, tight shorts and cheap plastic flip-flops. Both looked at him like he was a little nuts to be laying rubber in their street. The neighborhood seemed familiar to Nate, but he couldn't place why. It was more than just familiarity with his beat. Something bugged him about the area. As he got out of the car, he smiled. "Señoritas,"
neither of them looked old enough to be the baby's mother,
"Ustedes llamó la policia?"
The one with the baby and sporting blond streaks in her hair answered. "Si. Un batella."
There was a fight. That much he'd gotten off the radio.
There didn't seem to be much going on. Well, whatever had called him out was pretty much at the mop up stage now. He took a wild guess as the girls weren't volunteering much in the way of information. "Doméstica?" Both shook their heads in the negative. Well not a husband and wife brawl. God he hated those. Talk about a call that had the potential to go wonky at any moment.
This time the other girl answered. "Tres hombres, rayar a alguien un muchacho." Three guys beat the shit out of another guy. Good, another old fashion dog-pile. "Dos gringos y un negrito." Now that was odd. Two white guys and a black man beating someone up in Highland Park.
